I've been silent on here the last couple of weeks but my meat space life has been very full. Mostly with improv related things.
My improv group had a memorial show for my friend and fellow founder, Brian. I was so proud of everyone involved and how we came together and put on a really great show. I knew he was watching and enjoying too. Anyway, there were rehearsals leading up to that that needed time.
Also, I'm taking an improv class. Yes, I lead a group. Yes, I'm also taking classes. Wanting to be good at anything creative means you have to never stop learning. Every class I take reminds me of just how much i need to keep learning! So I had classes to take and a show to preform.
I'm also in another improv team. The team is made of different alumni from the same set of classes. Technically you're supposed to finish all the classes first but I guess they figured we were advanced enough. I really enjoy performing with this team tho. After years and years of being in charge of my own shows it really is a relief to just show up and play then go home.
So the last couple of weeks have been full of creative activities: learning, rehearsing, producing, performing. And all those activities based around the one activity of improvising.
It always amazes me how much work it takes to do something that is basically, making shit up on the fly. But then I think about the other creative things I like to do. When it comes to writing, how much time do I spend reading, researching and plotting before a single creative word hits the page. How much time do I spend watching shows and figuring out how they are put together, why this line went here and how that joke worked. How much standup time do I spend, just thinking about places and situations. How long do jokes have to brew in my head, how many times do I have to have to repeat it over and over till I get the right inflection.
What is really odd about that is that, I want to draw but I get frustrated when my first squiggles don't look anything like what I was attempting to draw. I really need to let my experience with other creative endeavors be my guide with art as well.
Lesson learned.
Through 2013 I will be trying to post creative things as often as possible. Follow me @robgonzo on twitter for shorter creative postings!
